watchOS 27 rolled out on September 14, 2026, bringing Siri AI, a new tap gesture and a redesigned app grid to the Apple Watch. But not every watch got the invite. Five models that ran watchOS 26 just fine can’t install it, including the original Apple Watch Ultra, a $799 watch that’s not even four years old.
If your watch says it’s up to date but you’re still on watchOS 26, you’re probably wearing one of them. Here’s the list, why Apple cut them, and what it means for you.
The 5 Apple Watches that didn’t make the cut
These watches are stuck on watchOS 26 for good. Apple lists watchOS 27 for Series 9 or later, SE 3 and Ultra 2 or later only (Apple Newsroom):
| Model | Released | Chip |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch Ultra (1st gen) | 2022 | S8 |
| Apple Watch Series 8 | 2022 | S8 |
| Apple Watch SE (2nd gen) | 2022 | S8 |
| Apple Watch Series 7 | 2021 | S7 |
| Apple Watch Series 6 | 2020 | S6 |
That’s three generations cut in a single update, one of the biggest support drops in Apple Watch history. Last year, watchOS 26 supported every one of these watches.
Is yours one? On your iPhone, open the Watch app and go to My Watch > General > About. The Model line tells you which watch you have.
Series 9 owners, relax. Apple’s website briefly left the Series 9 off the list in June, but Apple’s official announcements confirm it gets watchOS 27.
Why these 5 got cut
It comes down to the chip. Every watch that made the cut runs on the S9 chip or newer. Every watch that didn’t runs on the S8 or older.
Apple’s Cait Dooley, Apple Watch and Health product marketing manager, told TechRadar that Siri AI and the new tap gesture work best with the processing power in Series 9 and later, Ultra 2 and later, and SE 3.
In plain terms, the S9’s Neural Engine can handle on-device AI, and older chips can’t keep up.
What you’ll miss if your watch didn’t make the cut
These are the watchOS 27 features you won’t get on watchOS 26 (Apple Newsroom):
- Siri AI: a rebuilt, much smarter Siri that understands personal context and can act inside apps. It’s launching in beta, in English first, and not yet in the EU.
- New tap gesture: a quick tap to pick a widget in the Smart Stack.
- Dynamic app grid: your most-used apps, front and center.
- Smarter Workout Buddy: progress updates based on your fitness history, now without your iPhone nearby.
- Better indoor tracking: more accurate indoor run and walk distance.
- Everyday upgrades: one combined Find My app, guest keys, and card balances in Wallet.
The silver lining: watchOS 27 took some things away, too
Staying on watchOS 26 isn’t all loss. watchOS 27 removed a few features that some people use daily:
- Walkie-Talkie is gone completely.
- The app switcher is gone. Double-clicking the Digital Crown no longer opens your recent apps.
- The app grid changed. Pressing the crown now shows five suggested apps first, with no way to turn that off yet.
If you love Walkie-Talkie, your “outdated” watch keeps it.
Didn’t make the cut? Your watch still works
An unsupported watch isn’t a dead watch. It stays on watchOS 26, and everything you use today keeps working:
- Pairing with your iPhone still works, even after you update your iPhone to iOS 27. Apple confirmed this to TechRadar.
- Health and safety features stay, including workouts, Activity rings, heart notifications, Fall Detection and Apple Pay.
- Your apps keep running, though some developers will gradually start requiring watchOS 27 for new versions.
- Security fixes should continue for now, but Apple hasn’t said publicly for how long.
If your battery still gets you through the day, there’s no rush to replace your watch.
Should you upgrade?
Upgrade if you want Siri AI and the new features, or if your battery is fading. Apple launched the Series 12 and Ultra 4 on September 18, 2026, and kept the SE 3 on sale.
| If you have… | Upgrade to | Starting price (US) | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| SE 2, or any model on a budget | Apple Watch SE 3 | $249 | Cheapest way to get watchOS 27 and Siri AI |
| Series 6, 7 or 8 | Apple Watch Series 12 | $399 (42mm), $449 (46mm) | Newest chip, new heart sensors, longest support |
| Ultra (1st gen) | Apple Watch Ultra 4 | $799 | Same price as your Ultra, up to 50 hours of battery |
A refurbished Series 9 or Ultra 2 can save money, but they’re the oldest watches that made the cut this year. They’ll likely be first in line next time.
The watches that made the cut
watchOS 27 runs on these models and needs an iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), on iOS 27 (Apple Newsroom):
- Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 (ship with it)
- Apple Watch Series 11, Series 10 and Series 9
- Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Ultra 2
- Apple Watch SE 3
The bottom line
If you’re wearing a Series 6, 7, 8, SE 2 or original Ultra, your watch didn’t make the cut, but it isn’t finished either. It keeps working, keeps pairing, and even keeps Walkie-Talkie. You just won’t get Siri AI and the rest of watchOS 27.
Want the new features? The SE 3 is the cheapest way in. Want the longest support? Go for the Series 12 or Ultra 4.
