A couple of months ago we have published a post on how to get Dexcom G6 readings on a Samsung Galaxy Watch, and many of you have been asking if the same is possible with the latest Galaxy Watch 4 powered by Wear 3.0.
As Dexcom officially supports Wear OS devices, we were under the impression that the Dexcom G6 app will be available on the Galaxy Watch 4 from day one. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case, and Google and Samsung duo has yet to fix this issue.
However, there is a workaround that will allow you to get Dexcom G6 readings on your Galaxy Watch 4. In this post, we will show you how. Keep in mind that whether you have Galaxy Watch 4 or 4 classic; 40mm, 42mm, 44mm, or 46mm watch; or an LTE or Bluetooth model, the pairing method remains the same.
Does Dexcom work on Galaxy Watch 4?
Dexcom works on Galaxy Watch 4 but you don’t get the readings as effortlessly as other Wear OS devices. There is a long and painful workaround to get your blood sugar readings on the Watch 4.
How do I connect my Dexcom to my Galaxy 4 watch/4 Classic?
To connect your Dexcom to your Galaxy 4 watch, you need to follow these steps:
- Install ‘Wear Installer‘ from Google Play Store on your smartphone.
- Download the app’s WearOS version on the Galaxy Watch 4.
- On your watch, navigate to ‘Settings‘ (gear icon)
- Scroll down and Tap ‘About Watch‘
- Again, Scroll down and Tap ‘Software‘
- Tap on ‘Sofware Version‘ seven times to unlock Developer mode.
- Go back to Watch Settings by swiping right
- Find and tap on ‘Developer Options‘
- Scroll down and turn on the ‘ADB debugging‘.
- Also, toggle on ‘Debug over Wi-Fi‘ option
- Open the ‘Wear Installer‘ app on both devices
- Match the IP address shown on the screen.
- Tap on ‘Submit’ on mobile and select ‘Dexcom G6’ from the ‘Installed apps‘ section.
- Next, a prompt will appear on the watch screen asking you to ‘Allow Debugging’, tap on ‘OK‘. Select ‘Ok’ if there are prompts on your smartphone.
- On the Galaxy Watch 4, navigate to Settings>>Apps>>Permissions>>Dexcom G6′>>Files and Media>> Tap on ‘Allow only when using the app’.
- Restart both the watch and the smartphone.
- Once done, find the ‘Dexcom‘ face in the Watch Faces app and select it while using Dexcom G6.
- Your blood sugar monitoring journey with the Galaxy Watch 4 has begun!
As you can see, the process is relatively long and complicated. We hope that Google and Samsung will fix this issue soon so that users can enjoy Dexcom G6 readings on their Galaxy Watch 4 without any hassle.
You can download the ‘Wear Installer app’ on Galaxy Watch 4 both from the connected Android smartphone and the watch itself.
- On phone: Open the Google Play store > Categories > Watch apps > search ‘Wear Installer’ > tap on Install.
- On watch: Swipe up > Google Play Store > magnifying glass > select entry method > enter ‘Wear Installer’ > tap app in search results > Install.
Final Words:
We hope you found this post helpful. Getting blood sugar readings on a smartwatch is much more convenient than taking out your phone every time.
Pairing Dexcom G6 to Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 is as frustrating as any workaround gets, and this post cannot make it any easier. However, once you get it right, it will save you a lot of time in the long run.
